How to find out if your game is FUN in Only 10 Days

Saturday, May 13, 2023

Do you want to know how players will react to your game before you release it?

With the power of playtesting, you can!
In this blog post, we will show you how to find the fun of your game in just 10 days:

πŸ‘‰πŸ» DAY 01. Decide your playtest objective.

Don't just put your game in front of players and ask for their thoughts. Instead, think about what you want to learn from the playtest. Consider the most important things you need to learn to make your game a success, with prompt questions like "What parts of the game am I most uncertain about?" or "What do I absolutely need players to understand about this game?”

Some examples of objectives:

  • β€œDo players understand their goal from this level”

  • β€œHas the tutorial taught players how to use their special move”

  • β€œWill players recognise the correct strategy for this puzzle”

πŸ‘‰πŸ» DAY 02. Produce a build of the slice of your game that you'll test.

Make sure your scene is complete and ready to be built. For example, if you're using Unity, go to your build settings and click on the "Add Open Scenes" button to add your slice scene to the build. Choose your target platform and configure any other relevant settings.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» DAY 03. Write a survey.

Use a tool like Google Forms to create a survey for playtesting. Use open text fields, number ratings, and rating scales to gather useful feedback.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» DAY 04. Create an account on Itch.io.

This is a free distribution platform for games that's perfect for playtesting. Fill in the required information for your project, including a name and description, and link to the survey. Upload the build of your game's slice to the "Uploads" section of your project page. Set your game's status to "Published" or "Restricted," depending on whether you want the game to be publicly accessible or only available to select playtesters.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» DAY 05. Look for testers.

It’s a lot of effort to recruit playtesters. This means we want to maximise the value of each recruitment effort. Instead of recruiting just for a single playtest, we want to get as many people to agree that we can call on them in the future. Our recommendation is to create an email mailing list, and store them there. Other solutions are Discord servers or Telegram channels.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» DAY 06. Share your game with playtesters.

Share the Itch.io page with your playtesters and encourage them to fill out the survey after playing your game's slice.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» DAY 07. Take a break.

Wait for their feedback.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» DAY 08. Review feedback.

Start reading through the feedback and grouping similar themes together, counting how many times each opinion occurs.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» DAY 09. Understand "why" that occurred.

Determine what players liked and disliked to understand what needs improvement or changes. Things that players like can be a kind of confirmation for your design, and things that they dislike are often a good starting point to make adjustments. You might also learn about blockers and pain points in your game, e.g. difficulty.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» DAY 10. Plan next steps.

Based on the feedback, plan your next steps to improve the game.
